US Welcomes Uhuru’s New Job

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s appointment as a peace envoy to the Horn of Africa and the Great Lakes Region has been lauded by the US Department of State’s Bureau of African Affairs.

In a statement issued via Twitter, the bureau said Uhuru will continue to play a vital role in pushing for negotiations and peaceful resolution to current or possible conflicts in Northern Ethiopia and in Eastern DRCs.

“We welcome the appointment of Uhuru Kenyatta as peace envoy for the conflict in Northern Ethiopia and in Eastern DRC. A critical time for both conflicts – his work will be crucial,” the statement read.

During his presidency, President Uhuru actively participated in peace talks in South Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

President William Ruto during his inauguration said he had requested Uhuru to be Kenya’s peace envoy while commending him for steering the peace initiatives in the region.

“On peace initiative in our region, in Ethiopia and the Great Lakes region, I have asked my elder brother President Uhuru Kenyatta who has done commendable engagement with those regions and he has graciously agreed to continue chairing those discussions on behalf of the Government of Kenya,” Ruto said.
