Vietnam’s National Assembly on Saturday approved the appointments of two new deputy prime ministers and three cabinet ministers, state media reported, as the country’s leadership prepares for a major political reshuffle ahead of next year’s Communist Party congress.

According to the Vietnam News Agency, former Minister of Home Affairs Pham Thi Thanh Tra and former Communist Party chief of Gia Lai province Ho Quoc Dung were confirmed as deputy prime ministers, bringing the total number of deputy premiers in the government to nine.

The assembly also endorsed the appointments of new ministers for foreign affairs, agriculture, and home affairs, though their names have not yet been officially released.

The approvals came during the National Assembly’s final session of the year, which began Monday and will run until December 11.

Lawmakers are expected to review key economic, social, and administrative priorities as the country positions itself for a leadership transition.

The session comes just months before the five-yearly Communist Party congress, scheduled for January, where Vietnam will set its strategic direction for 2026–2030 and select a new central leadership team, including potential successors to top state positions.

Vietnam’s government has seen several high-level changes in recent months amid a continuing anti-corruption drive and efforts to strengthen economic governance.

The latest appointments reflect a push to consolidate political stability and ensure continuity ahead of the pivotal congress.
