Since the oncology section was formed a year ago, screenings at the Vihiga County Referral Hospital have revealed at least 200 instances of cancer.

According to Dr. Joan Kitagwa, breast, cervical, oesophageal, colon, and prostate cancers are the most common types of cancer that afflict both urban and rural people.

Insisting that locals get early cancer screenings because the disease is curable when found in its early stages, she said the identified patients have been coming to the facilities for regular check-ups and treatment.

“The cervical is for women, whilst the prostate is for men, but the rest affects both sexes,” Dr. Kitagwa noted.

She urged individuals to see a doctor right away if they see a lump or growth in any area of the body so that it can be examined further.

According to the doctor, a diet high in fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins reduces the risk of developing cancer.

“Conversely, processed meats, refined carbohydrates, salt and alcohol may increase the risk of developing cancer,” she says.
