Vihiga: Suspected Vandal Dies After Falling from Electric Pole in Luanda

A man has died after falling from an electric pole in Luanda, Vihiga County, in what authorities suspect was an attempted act of vandalism.

The unidentified man reportedly climbed the pole with the intention of stealing electric wires but suffered critical injuries when the structure collapsed. He was rushed to Coptic Hospital in critical condition but later succumbed while undergoing treatment.

According to local authorities, the incident occurred in the Esanda area, drawing a crowd of residents who were angered by the attempted sabotage of essential infrastructure. Police were quickly dispatched to the scene and dispersed the irate crowd, preventing a potential mob justice situation.

Esanda Assistant Chief Aston Okwemba condemned the act and issued a stern warning to residents against vandalizing power lines, noting the grave safety risks and the broader impact on the community.

“Such actions not only endanger lives but also threaten to plunge entire communities into darkness. We urge the public to report suspicious activities around power installations,” Okwemba stated.

The incident highlights the growing concern over electricity infrastructure vandalism in rural areas, which continues to disrupt power supply and pose serious dangers to those involved. Police have launched investigations into the incident and warned that anyone found tampering with public utilities will face the full force of the law.
