Violent Protests Rock Malindi as Matatu Operators Clash with Youth

Chaos erupted in Malindi on Saturday when a protest by matatu operators escalated into violent clashes, leaving several injured and property destroyed.

The demonstrations, initially staged outside Malindi municipal offices, quickly spiraled out of control, disrupting operations and traffic for hours.

Matatu operators alleged that the violence was instigated by hired goons, reportedly acting on the orders of local politicians.

Video footage captured youth attacking operators with sticks and damaging their vehicles, including smashing windows and windscreens.

“The goons have come to damage our matatus and beat us up. These youth are known to us, yet they’ve turned to violence,” lamented one operator.

Malindi officials dismissed the operators’ claims, asserting that the protest was politically motivated.

Sub-county administrator Dadu Chome suggested the demonstrations were a ploy to reinstate former municipal manager Silas Ngundo, who is entangled in a legal battle over his dismissal.

Accusations were also leveled at local politician Hafswa Homeni, whom some blame for inciting the unrest.

Police have launched investigations into the violence, with Malindi Sub-County Police Commander Jos Mudavadi vowing to uncover the perpetrators.

As tensions simmer, leaders are urging political tolerance to prevent further disruptions in the coastal town.
