KeNHA Closes Road To Mount A Virtual Weighbridge

Traffic marshalls and the KeNHA officials have provided a diversion for traffic to ensure the safety of the workers and motorists travelling along the corridor.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA) has announced the closure of Merille River – Marsabit (A2) Road, at Laisamis Virtual Weighbridge.

According to the authority, the road works will include installing sensors to monitor overloaded cargo trucks along the road.

The road will be closed from Thursday, September 15, 2022, to Friday, November 4, 2022.

Traffic marshalls and the KeNHA officials have provided a diversion for traffic to ensure the safety of the workers and motorists travelling along the corridor.

Virtual weighbridges have been touted as an innovative solution to overcome the overloading menace.

Trucks pass over a network of weight sensors located on the motorway and their details are captured by cameras located near the sensors.

This enables Axle load enforcement units to filter out trucks which have exceeded the limit for more thorough checks at the weighbridges.

The infrastructure is located along major trunk roads such as Yatta, Gilgil, Juja, Mariakani, Kamulu, Makutano, Mai Mahiu and Suswa.

KeNHA has vowed to roll out the technology on other roads so as to ensure compliance

Other technologies used to enhance axle load compliance include a mobile patrol unit tasked to track down truck drivers who refuse to weigh their trucks at stations, and trucks that traverse inter-county roads.
