Two new virtual weighbridge stations are being constructed at Mayoni and Mukumu areas of Bungoma and Kakamega counties respectively.
The virtual stations will supplement the existing static weighbridges in Webuye, Malava and Malaba in a bid to tame abuse of stipulated axle load limits in Kenya.
The Mayoni and Mukumu stations will ensure loose cargo trucks and cane transporters stick to approved load limits within KeNHA roads i.e Class A, B.
A report seen by Uzalendo News indicates both weighbridge stations are now sixty percent complete paving the way for implementation.
Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir last week announced an increase in the number of weighbridges across the country as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance compliance to Axle Load Limits.
To improve monitoring and enforcement, Chirchir disclosed the installation of 28 additional weighbridges, which will include both virtual and static stations.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by regulation 9(2) of the Kenya Roads (Kenya National Highways Authority) Regulations, 2013, the Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport increases the number of installed weighbridges set out in Part II of the Schedule of the Regulations, with the weighbridges set out in the Schedule hereto,” part of the official notice stated.
The newly introduced static weighbridges include Kikambala along the A7 highway, Kanyonyo along the A3, Awendo along the A1, Dongo Kundu along the Mombasa Southern Bypass A8, and Laisamis along the A2.
The A1, A2, and A8 are major highways in Kenya, as classified under the Kenya Roads Act and the Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA) regulations of 2013.
Additionally, the CS announced the addition of several other static weighbridges across various key locations. These include Malaba along the A8, Ahero along the A12, and Eldoret along the A8. Other newly added stations are Mayoni along the B12, Kamulu along the B63, and Kaloleni along the B91.
Further additions include Yatta along the A3, Sabaki along the A7, and Mwatate along the A6. Kibwezi along the A9, Emali along the A5, and Malili along the A8 are also now part of the network of static weighbridges.
The list continued with Madogo along the A3, Mau Summit along the A8, Kajiado along the A2, and Eldama Ravine along the B77. Cheptiret along the A8, Mukumu along the A1, and Kapenguria along the A1 are also among the new weighbridge stations.
Finally, additional stations like Southern Bypass-Kikuyu along the A8, Southern Bypass-Mombasa along the A8, Kamagambo along the A1, and Meru along the B63 have also been introduced.
