Senators have begun voting for members of the East African Legislative Assembly.
The two Houses of Parliament will vote on the 27 names submitted by political parties to elect the country’s nine EALA representatives.
National Assembly and the Senate will vote separately on the list after days of intense lobbying.
The election began a few minutes before 11 AM.
On Wednesday, President William Ruto’s UDA party elected five preferred candidates for the EALA positions during a meeting.
They elected the five by secret ballot from a shortlist of 15 names.
The Kenya Kwanza Alliance MPs have been directed to vote for the five nominees, leaving the remaining 10 on their own.
However, Raila Odinga’s ODM party did not select favourites for its two slots in EALA.
The party had shortlisted six candidates.
Jubilee party had also submitted three names, and so did Wiper.
In the UDA line-up are Fred Muteti, Falhada Iman, Hassan Omar, Zipporah Kering, David Sankok.
