The Senate has kicked off impeachment hearings against Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, with the ward representatives presenting a collection of the governor’s vulgar past. – By Gerald Gekara.

In the videos, the governor exchanged abuse with a Nairobi businessman whom he accuses of embezzling public funds.

The county boss made reference to private body parts a language the MCAs said was unfit for a serving leader.

Interestingly, despite the senate urging the speaker not to allow them to be played since the hearings were televised, the clips still got played.

The vulgar recordings were recorded by the governor himself, whom despite receiving criticism was praised for keeping cartels out of Nairobi’s public lands.

Out of 122 MCAs, lead counsel Ndegwa Njiru says 88 ward representatives who voted to impeach Governor Sonko were rightfully exercising their mandate.

“There is a price for everything and the price for accountability and transparency demands that the Governor should vacate office,” he said.

Sonko, represented by lawyer Harrison Kinyanjui, will submit his defense on Thursday.

Governor Sonko is accused of gross misconduct, gross violation of the constitution, abuse of office and committing crimes under the national law.
