Wacheni Vitisho—Energy CS Wandayi Tells Opposition MPs They ‘Lack Power to Remove Ruto’

Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has dismissed threats by opposition lawmakers to impeach President William Ruto, saying they lack both the authority and the numbers to effect such a move.

Speaking during a Thanksgiving ceremony for Makamu wa Makamu in Asere Village, Ugunja Constituency, Wandayi, once a fierce critic of the government in his days as National Assembly Minority Leader, accused opposition MPs of empty rhetoric.

“Wacheni vitisho baridi, nani amekupatia nguvu ya kutoa Rais? Hawa wabunge wakomeshe hio tabia. Ruto hatoki!” he told the crowd, describing opposition leaders as “delusional and bitter” over Ruto’s growing political strength.

The CS said those who feel sidelined by the president’s broad-based administration should “move on,” insisting Ruto has forged new alliances that will sustain him not just to 2027 but through 2032.

His remarks come amid turmoil within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). Party leader Raila Odinga recently reiterated that ODM remains loyal to President Ruto, despite dissent from a younger faction within his party.

Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna, along with outspoken MPs such as Babu Owino, have publicly opposed the alignment, triggering calls for their removal from party positions.

The split has highlighted tensions over Ruto’s political realignments and the shifting balance of power in Parliament.

With a number of opposition MPs warming to the government side, Ruto appears to have solidified his control, weakening prospects for a united opposition front.

Wandayi’s latest broadside underscores the administration’s confidence in weathering political storms and silencing impeachment talk.

For ODM, however, the growing rift may prove more destabilising than the government’s threats, as the party grapples with its identity in a political era increasingly defined by Ruto’s dominance.
