Lands, Housing and Urban Planning Cabinet Secretary, Alice Wahome, has called on leaders and residents of the Mt Kenya region to put political debates on hold and focus on development until after the 2027 general election.
Speaking in Oljabet town, Laikipia West constituency, during the launch of a Ksh 56.3 million market project, Wahome emphasized the need for unity and progress, citing strong backing from President William Ruto’s administration.
“Our ministry enjoys the full support of the President, especially due to the government’s commitment to the affordable housing program,” Wahome said. “Through this initiative, we have created over 200,000 jobs across the country.”
The new market, which will accommodate 500 traders, is expected to be completed in nine months. Wahome pledged transparency in the allocation of stalls and directed the local MCA and area chiefs to ensure the contractor hires youth from the community. Manual labourers will earn Ksh 600 per day, while artisans will be paid Ksh 1,200.
Wahome also defended the inclusion of opposition figures in government, asserting that the President has a constitutional obligation to serve all citizens, regardless of political alignment.
Accompanying the CS was Laikipia East MP Mwangi Kiunjuri, who praised the collaboration between national and county governments for spurring development in the region. He disclosed that Laikipia West had secured over Ksh 120 million for electricity connectivity projects.
Kiunjuri, however, cautioned residents against following emerging political movements without scrutiny. “Don’t be swayed by people just because they’ve formed new political parties and call themselves ‘Itungati’,” he warned.
Using vivid metaphors, Kiunjuri added, “Do not elect an owl thinking it’s a peaceful bird just because it cries loudly. When the time comes, I will campaign for only two people – myself, Mwangi Kiunjuri, and President William Ruto.”
He warned that poor political choices in 2027 could lead to regret, urging voters to choose leaders based on their track records and vision for the country.
