Roots Party presidential candidate George Wajackoyah has slammed critics who claim he is a British citizen in order to derail his presidential bid.
Wajackoyah was responding to former presidential candidate Peter Solomon Gichira, who wrote to the British High Commission in Nairobi seeking clarification on whether the controversial politician is a registered British citizen and whether he has renounced his British citizenship.
In a statement, Wajackoyah stated that he only has Kenyan citizenship and has never changed his citizenship.
He claims his critics are wasting their time and should simply look up the information on the internet.
“I have never changed my citizenship. They just ought to go to the internet and google. They are wasting their time to go to the British Embassy. Nobody is deporting me because I am a Kenyan, born in Kenya with very high epistemology in terms of academia,” Wajackoyah said.
“I have been outside the country, Living indefinitely in a country doesn’t necessarily mean you have to be a citizen. These circus need to read before they write they are wasting their time.” Â
Gichira in his letter copied to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) wanted the commission to bar Wajackoyah from contesting, claiming he holds dual citizenship, yet the Kenyan Constitution does not allow such.
“If the UK confirms that Wajackoyah is their citizen then it means he cannot run for elections in Kenya,” Gichira said.
According to the IEBC, candidates for president of Kenya must first be Kenyan citizens by birth and not be under any obligation to any foreign governments.
Additionally, they cannot have dual citizenship “unless the other country’s citizenship has been acquired by operation of law without the ability to opt out.”
