Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi Fights For Survival As Poll Petition Continues

The Nairobi High Court will rule whether or not to order a recount of ballots from various polling stations in a petition challenging Governor Ahmed Abdullahi’s victory in three weeks.

Former NHIF chief executive officer Hassan Adama filed the complaint, requesting that the electoral court order scrutiny and recount of ballots following the August 9 General Election.

According to the petition, there were several mistakes that prevented Jubilee governor candidate Adam from winning.

After parties in a case contesting Wajir Governor Abdullahi’s victory brought all their witnesses to give evidence in the case, Justice George Dulu announced he will issue the verdict on January 16 at 8:30 a.m.

Wajir county Returning Officer Mohamed Adan Ali testified in court today that the gubernatorial elections held on August 9 were free, fair, and transparent.

Adam, via his lawyer Mansur Issa, asked the court to impose orders ordering IEBC to provide all KIEMS kits or SD cards used in 11 polling stations in Wajir stating the total number of voters collected by the KIEMS kits for inspection.

The petitioner further requests that the court order the IEBC to produce to the court all ballot boxes and packets of counterfoils of used ballot papers for the gubernatorial election from the remaining 27 polling stations for examination, scrutiny, and recount of all valid votes.

The petitioners want inspection, examination, and recount of all valid ballots at the following polling stations: Dadantalai Primary, Garsechukala Primary, Towfiq Center, Junction, Anole Secondary School, Aresa Wajiyaqo Primary School, and Masalale Mobile.

During the hearing, Adam sought to have Adbdullahi’s election annulled on the grounds that there were significant inconsistencies in form 37A results, such that the total votes cast in some polling stations exceeded the overall voter turnout as calculated by the KIEMS Kit.

According to the petitioner, there were anomalies in the Eldas and Wajir east constituencies.
