Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba has been summoned to appear before the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Saturday, April 5, following a protest in her constituency where crowds were heard chanting slogans against President William Ruto.

The protest, captured in a video that quickly went viral, showed Wamuchomba walking with residents of Githunguri as they chanted “Ruto Must Go” on Friday evening just ahead of the president’s planned visit to the region.

Although the DCI has not officially stated the reason for the summons, the timing points to concerns over her alleged role in mobilizing the gathering.

Wamuchomba confirmed the summons in a statement on social media, saying she received a call from the County Criminal Investigations Officer.

“The CCIO Kiambu has, through a telephone call, summoned me because the great people of Githunguri refused to be lured by fake promises and projects that never materialized,” she posted on X. “Arrest can be done, but it will not change the facts.”

The MP has recently voiced strong criticism of the government’s handling of the coffee sector, particularly after the gazettement of new levies on coffee sales. In an open letter addressed to the president last week, she called for the immediate revocation of the charges, saying they were introduced without public consultation or parliamentary approval. “These levies were gazetted on February 7, 2025, without engaging farmers or clearing through the National Assembly,” she stated.

Wamuchomba’s summoning comes at a time of rising political tension in the Mt. Kenya region, with other leaders like Irungu Nyakera also expressing dissatisfaction ahead of the president’s development tour.

As debate continues over agricultural reforms and regional representation, the Githunguri MP’s confrontation with law enforcement reflects the growing unease among leaders and constituents alike.
