Wandayi Warns Gachagua Against Shortcut to Power, Urges Patience Until 2027

Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has cautioned opposition leaders, particularly former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, against seeking to ascend to power through unconstitutional means, urging them instead to wait for the 2027 General Election.

Speaking on Sunday in Migori County, Wandayi accused Gachagua and his allies of being behind recent Gen Z-led protests, claiming their motive was not to represent the youth but to destabilize the government for personal political gain.

“The protest was not by the youth, it was by leaders desiring to take leadership. They are hiding behind other people’s children. We warn them to stop that behaviour. They should wait for the next elections,” said Wandayi.

He emphasized that the path to leadership must follow democratic processes, noting that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is now fully constituted and ready to oversee the 2027 elections.

Wandayi’s sentiments were echoed by South Mugirango MP Silvanus Osoro, who expressed support for the national dialogue initiative spearheaded by ODM leader Raila Odinga. Osoro called on leaders who are not interested in the talks to step aside and allow Kenyans willing to engage in constructive dialogue to do so.

He further urged Gachagua to refrain from attacking Odinga, asserting that the former Prime Minister is not Gachagua’s political equal.

The remarks come amid heightened political temperatures and youth-led demonstrations across the country, with leaders divided on how best to address the concerns raised.
