DCI detectives from Maseno, Kisumu County, are investigating the death of a prison officer attached to Kisumu Maximum Prison, also known as Kodiaga.

Fred Oganyo, a 37-year-old officer, allegedly shot himself while on duty on Wednesday night.

According to his immediate relatives and the authorities investigating the situation, the incident occurred about 9.30 p.m. last night.

When the unfortunate occurrence occurred, the officer’s wife, Mercy Onyango, said the father of three had been assigned to guard duty at the prison’s main entrance together with two colleagues.

According to Ms Onyango, he was in the company of two of his colleagues when the unfortunate incident took place.

“I found him at the main gate, together with his two colleagues when I came back from work. It was around 8.30 pm,” she said.

They conversed, and she even requested money from the deceased to purchase food.

Before his demise, the officer had warned the kids before he departed that his property should be well taken care of if he died.

“He was drunk. I don’t understand why he was given a gun while in that state. He left the house in a mess,” she added while speaking to The Star on phone.

“We didn’t quarrel. I am not aware of any differences he may have had with anyone at his place of work.”

One of the children, the firstborn, sat for the KCPE exams in 2021.

His body was transferred to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu, and preliminary results show the officer was stressed.

“He had unsolved family problems. We’ve been encouraging officers to talk to their friends and family about their concerns rather than ending their own lives,” the Kisumu county police comander Alphonse Peter stated.

“We can’t say whether he was intoxicated or not, but the reality is that he was stressed,” he added.

A comprehensive report will be available once investigators have completed their investigation, according to the county police chief.
