Warrant Issued for Boniface Mwangi Over Alleged Assault of Police Officers

NAIROBI, June 12, 2025 â€” A Nairobi court has issued a warrant of arrest against prominent activist Boniface Mwangi after he failed to appear in court to answer to charges of assault and use of abusive language toward police officers.

Mwangi was scheduled to take a plea on Thursday but did not present himself, prompting the court to issue the warrant. The case is set to be mentioned on July 14 before Court 1.

According to the charge sheet, Mwangi is accused of assaulting Sgt. Osman Omar (No. 218181) on April 20, 2025, at the Metropolitan Court in the Kilimani area, Dagoretti Sub-County, Nairobi County. The officer was reportedly executing his official duties when the alleged assault occurred, resulting in actual bodily harm.

In a separate incident on April 2, 2025, Mwangi is alleged to have assaulted Police Constable Robert Oyola (No. 87673) at the same location, again causing bodily harm. That same day, the activist is also accused of using abusive language against Sgt. Omar in a public place with intent to provoke a breach of the peace.

Mwangi, a well-known figure in Kenya’s civil society landscape, has yet to respond publicly to the allegations. His legal team has also not issued any statement regarding his failure to attend court.

The case adds to the controversial activist’s long-standing history of confrontations with law enforcement, raising questions about civil liberties, police accountability, and public order in high-profile legal disputes.
