Was Uhuru Kenyatta’s Viral Gen Z Remarks Misinterpreted?

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has recently garnered significant attention following the circulation of a viral video in which he seems to call on Kenya’s youth, particularly Gen Z, to advocate for their rights.

However, the full context of his remarks clarify that they were directed specifically at the family of his late cousin, Kibathi Muigai.

The video originates from a burial service held on January 17, 2025, where Kenyatta spoke at the funeral of Kibathi, who passed away at the age of 72 earlier this month.

During the solemn occasion in Nairobi, Kenyatta expressed his admiration for Kibathi’s commitment to continue the legacy of fighting for justice initiated by his father.

“I was very proud of that young man who committed himself to continue with the fight that his father had started,” Kenyatta said. He passionately urged Kibathi’s family, including his cousin Ngina, to not succumb to fear and to assert their rights. “Fight for your rights not just sitting there while your property is being taken away,” he implored.

Kenyatta reassured the grieving family that the entire Kenyatta clan stands united with them, emphasizing their willingness to help in any way possible during this difficult time.

In addition to his message of empowerment, Kenyatta fondly remembered Kibathi, reflecting on the profound impact he had on their family.

“There is not a single member of our family who Kibathi did not touch in one way or another,” he remarked, highlighting their shared memories and experiences growing up.

Kenyatta recounted Kibathi’s determination and resilience, even reminiscing about his cousin’s time in prison, which served as a formative experience in his life.

“He was a man who loved everyone equally and was always there for you,” Kenyatta stated, causing laughter among the attendees as he shared light-hearted anecdotes from their youth.
