Environment and Forestry Cabinet Secretary Keriako Tobiko has today chaired a briefing meeting by Kenya Water Towers Agency (KWTA) on the Kenya Water Towers Conservation and Coordination Policy and Bill.
The CS said that the meeting coincides with World Water Day which is celebrated annually to raise awareness about the importance of water and its sources and the need to conserve it.
The CS urged KWTA to finalize the Policy and Bill which will give the agency the necessary legal and administrative status.
The CS directed KWTA to work closely with the legal team in the Ministry and come up with the next steps to ensure the Policy and Bill are out there for the public to interrogate it.
The CS said there is no harm in socializing the documents with parliamentary organs and the Council of Governors to interrogate it and if there are critical issues it can be addressed at an early stage.
On the Maasai Mau Forest, the CS said Agency should give a status report on reclamation, restoration, community livelihoods programs, and fencing.
The 30km fencing of Maasai Mau is nearing completion and will be commissioned on the 2nd week of April.
The meeting was addressed by KWTA Timothy Naeku (Board member) and Prof Julius Tanui (Ag DG) and attended by representatives from Kenyatta University Consortium, heads of departments and representatives from state agencies in the Ministry.
