‘We have no opponent’ – MP Babu Owino scoffs at rivals in Nairobi Governor showdown

Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has downplayed emerging competition in the Nairobi gubernatorial race, declaring that there is currently no serious challenger capable to pose a challenge ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Thursday, Owino brushed off what he termed as propaganda from “unworthy opponents,” projecting confidence about his political standing in the capital and the broader direction of Nairobi politics.

“Do not listen to any propaganda from unworthy opponents. As of today, we don’t have an opponent in Nairobi,” Owino said in a message addressed to Nairobi residents.

Earlier reports had claimed that the legislator had decided to redirect his political ambitions toward Kisumu County’s top seat following consultations within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.

Babu, however, described the reports as misinformation, reaffirming his commitment to contesting for Nairobi Governor and insisting he has no plans to withdraw.

The outspoken legislator further assured supporters that his political movement remains firmly rooted in the capital, promising victory when the time comes.

“I will ensure I deliver you to the city of victory. To the Nairobians, we are in Nairobi to stay. Let’s meet soon,” he added, in remarks that further fuel speculation about his gubernatorial ambitions.

Babu’s comments come against the backdrop of several leaders already expressing interest in contesting the governor’s seat in 2027.

The MP has continued to position himself as a key political force in Nairobi, leveraging his popularity among youth and urban voters.

Despite Owino’s assertion that there is no formidable opposition, several politicians have already publicly expressed interest or been linked to the Nairobi gubernatorial race.

Among those mentioned in political circles is incumbent Governor Johnson Sakaja, who is expected to seek a second term.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino himself is widely viewed as a potential contender, although he is yet to formally declare his candidature.

Other names that have featured prominently include Makadara MP George Aladwa, who has openly indicated interest in the seat, and businesswoman Agnes Kagure, who contested the position in 2022 and has signalled intentions of making another attempt.

Former KICC board chair Irungu Nyakera and former Presidential advisor Moses Kuria have also hinted at a possible run, while Embakasi North MP James Gakuya has been mentioned among those considering entering the race.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, the list of aspirants is expected to grow, with party dynamics, coalitions and regional considerations likely to shape the final line-up.
