The Kenya National Highways Authority is banking on mobile weigh-bridge automation, as a key solution to end queues experienced at major weighing stations.
Speaking during an inspection of its Mtwapa station, Axle load assistant Manager for Mariakani cluster Victor Kithome said automation and mobile weighbridges have greatly reduced the amount of time spent on roads.
“When we rolled out mobile weigh-bridge, we cut down traffic by 70 percent because only trucks with overload issues are being weighed at the stations.”
The authority also underscored the importance of weighing cargo at the stations.
“For those truckers who are avoiding weigh-bridges, we urge them to comply with the axle load regulations because this is how we maintain the quality of our roads.”
Kenha incorporates Mobile weigh-bridges and virtual weight sensors to filter out overloaded trucks for inspection.
These measures have seen a reduction in cases of overloading, upping the compliance rate to 90 percent.
