Danny Welbeck has revealed that legendary former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson personally called him after his extra-time winner for Brighton in the FA Cup.
The 34-year-old striker secured Brighton’s place in the quarter-finals with a crucial goal against Newcastle earlier this month. Shortly after, he received an unexpected call from his former boss, despite Ferguson having retired from management over a decade ago.
Speaking to BBC Sport, Welbeck shared his surprise at the call. “It was a ‘No caller ID’ number, and sometimes I don’t even answer those,” he admitted. “But I picked up, and it was him. He was buzzing, talking about the goal and the performance. He’s always looked out for his players, even now.”
Welbeck, who rose through United’s academy, was a key figure in Ferguson’s final seasons before moving to Arsenal in 2014. Despite playing for various clubs since then, the striker remains in touch with the legendary manager.
Ferguson’s call highlights the lasting bond between the two, as well as the Scotsman’s enduring interest in his former players’ careers.
Welbeck continues to prove his worth in the Premier League, and with Brighton now set to face Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup quarter-finals, he may be hoping for another call from his old boss should he produce more magic in the competition.
