Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has issued a stern warning to some leaders from the Mt Kenya region who are perceived to be undermining the interests of their constituents.
Speaking at a wedding in Kiambu County, Gachagua emphasized that these leaders could face serious consequences in the upcoming 2027 elections if they do not align themselves with the priorities of Mt Kenya residents.
Addressing guests at the wedding of Paul Wetosi and Jacinta Wanjiru, the daughter of Juja MP George Koimburi, Gachagua stated that the residents have taken notice of their leaders’ actions and will not hesitate to make changes at the ballot box.
“The people of Mt Kenya are watching closely, and some leaders are on the verge of losing their seats in 2027 if they do not change,” he said.
His remarks come amid tensions in the region, as a faction of MPs have been openly critical of the Deputy President.
Some of these politicians are known to be close allies of President William Ruto, leading to speculation about internal rifts within Kenya’s Kwanza government.
Recently, discussions emerged about a potential impeachment plot against Gachagua, but sources indicate that President Ruto intervened to prevent it from advancing.
During his speech, Gachagua emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that those leaders have until December to “mend their ways.” He asserted,
“By this December, we will know who will be returning to office and who will be replaced.” The Deputy President warned that after this deadline, no changes could be made regarding their political positions.
Gachagua also cautioned the nation not to misinterpret the current quietness of Mt Kenya residents. He affirmed that the community is politically aware and will not be easily swayed.
“The people of Mt Kenya are intelligent and capable of deciding the right path for our region,” he noted. “Just because they are silent, doesn’t mean they don’t understand what’s happening in politics.”
