Were Assassination: Puzzle Over USD 4,800 Cash, Bullets and Teargas in Suspects’ Homes

Detectives investigating the killing of Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Ong’ondo Were say they have made a significant breakthrough after recovering cash, ammunition, and teargas canisters from the homes of suspects linked to the case.

Four individuals were arraigned on Monday, 5 May, at a court located at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Authorities told the court that searches conducted at the homes of the suspects had yielded “key material evidence.”

At the residence of the main suspect—who reportedly claims to be a police officer—investigators recovered $4,800 (approximately KSh 619,000). The origin and potential relevance of the money are now the focus of further investigation.

In a separate search, nine live rounds of ammunition and eight unregistered teargas canisters were found at the home of another suspect. Two vehicles seized during the operation are set to undergo forensic analysis, including DNA testing.

The suspects—identified as William Imoli Shighali, Juma Ali Hikal, Douglas Muchiri Wambugu, and David Mihigo Kagame—will remain in custody for 30 days as investigations continue. Magistrate Irene Gichobi granted the prosecution’s request for extended detention to allow further inquiries.

MP Were was killed under mysterious circumstances last month, prompting a nationwide outcry and calls for justice from political leaders and citizens alike.

The motive for the murder remains unclear, and authorities have not ruled out political or criminal involvement. Detectives say they are pursuing several leads as the probe intensifies.
