National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has called for stronger institutional collaboration between Parliament and the Judiciary to enhance service delivery and safeguard constitutional governance.
Speaking on day two of the 3rd National Assembly Leadership Retreat, Wetang’ula said leaders must engage directly to drive social transformation and uphold the principle of institutional comity.
He presided over a joint colloquium with Chief Justice Martha Koome, which brought together senior officials from both arms of government.
According to the Speaker, the discussions focused on shared priorities, including oversight responsibilities, fiscal planning for the 2025/26 financial year, and ways to balance independence with interdependence between Parliament and the Judiciary.
A key agenda item was the growing concern among lawmakers over court rulings that have declared several pieces of legislation unconstitutional. Wetang’ula noted that the session would deliberate on frameworks to strengthen Parliament’s legislative mandate while respecting the Judiciary’s role as a constitutional arbiter.
He emphasized that constructive engagement between the two institutions is essential to avoid conflicts, ensure effective law-making, and maintain public confidence in governance.
