Wetangula Suspends MP Iman Falhada for 90 Days After Fight With MP Umulkher Harun

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has banned EALA MP Falhada Dekow from accessing Parliament Buildings for 90 days.

In a statement dated Wednesday, April 9, the Speaker stated that the decision was taken after the EALA MP was captured fighting with ODM-nominated MP Umulkher Harun Mohamed.

Additionally, the Speaker directed the EALA MP to write a letter explaining the fight and also issue a public apology.

The apology is expected to be tendered to the Speaker’s office in writing by 5 pm on Monday, April 14, 2025.

“Having reviewed the video and the incident report, it is clear that the violent altercation casts Parliament in bad light, and is likely to reflect adversely on the dignity or integrity of Parliament and, indeed the sanctity of the precincts of Parliament,” read the statement in part.

“In the meantime, Hon. Falhada is forthwith precluded from accessing the precincts of Parliament and facilities for a period of 90 days, save on the day and time when she’ll deliver her written explanation to the Speaker.”

For nominated MP Umulkher, Wetang’ula announced that she would be required to apologise to MPs over the fight.

“Given that the incident involved a sitting member and a former member, I am inclined to first accord the current member Honourable Harun the opportunity to explain herself and to apologise to the house.”

Wetangula further indicated that further directions would be issued upon review of Falhada’s apology. The Speaker also hinted that further action could be taken against the two parliamentarians after their respective apologies are reviewed.

During the same sitting, the Speaker further cautioned Members of Parliament against filming such incidents within the house as he hinted possible punishment against the individual who recorded the two MPs in a brawl.

“The recording of the video of the altercation is claimed to have been done by a sitting member of the house. Should the claims be ascertained, it should also attract sanctions under the Parliament Powers and Priviledges act Cap 6.
