No WhatsApp for These Smart Phones from June 1, 2025: Check the List

WhatsApp has officially ended support for several older smartphones starting today, June 1, 2025 leaving many vintage device users with a bittersweet farewell to the popular messaging platform.

The Meta-owned app had initially scheduled the move for May 5, but the deadline was pushed to June to give users extra time.

This shift marks the latest phase of WhatsApp’s routine compatibility updates, aimed at improving security and functionality across newer devices.

If your smartphone is nearly a decade old, this change could affect you. The app will no longer work on iPhones that cannot upgrade to at least iOS 15.1. Specifically, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus are now officially unsupported.

On the Android side, WhatsApp requires devices to run Android OS 5.0 (Lollipop) or higher. That means older models like the Samsung Galaxy S3, S4 Mini, Galaxy Note 2, and Motorola’s Moto G (1st Gen) are now cut off unless they’ve been manually upgraded a risky move that can void warranties or even permanently disable the phone.

Complete list of affected models includes

• iPhones: iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus
• Samsung: Galaxy S3, Note 2, Ace 3, S4 Mini
• Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Moto E 2014, Razr HD
• HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
• LG: Nexus 4, Optimus G, L90, G2 Mini
• Sony: Xperia Z, T, V, SP

According to Meta, these outdated devices no longer receive essential security updates or support system features required for WhatsApp to function securely.

“We regularly review what operating systems we support,” Meta stated. “The devices we drop support for typically have very low usage and are more vulnerable to security threats.”

Will your messages disappear?

No. Users will receive multiple notifications ahead of support being dropped, allowing time to back up chats or transfer them to a new device.

How to check your OS version:
• iPhone: Go to Settings > General > About > iOS Version
• Android: Go to Settings > About Phone > Android Version

If your phone is on the chopping block, now’s the time to consider upgrading. As technology evolves, staying updated ensures access to secure and fully functioning apps like WhatsApp — and keeps you connected in a digital-first world.
