On Tuesday mid-morning, internet users noticed that Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp was down.
Even with an uninterrupted internet connection, the platform’s mobile application and web version were inoperable, with the latter only displaying a ‘Retrying…’ error message in the top-left corner of the screen.
Users, as usual, took to Twitter to complain that the app only allowed them to type messages to friends and then send them.
However, the messages became stuck and were never delivered.
The messages sent to WhatsApp groups were left hanging, while texts sent to individuals left a single tick.
The outage was felt in many parts of the world, and the outage tracking website DownDetector recorded a spike in the number of problems at 10 a.m.
