Wiper Leader Kalonzo Breaks Silence Over BBI Ruling

Kalonzo Musyoka, the leader of the Wiper Movement, has urged supporters of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) Bill to quit vilifying the judiciary and follow due process.

Kalonzo stated in a statement on Monday that though he did not agree with the five-judge bench’s decision on the BBI Bill on Thursday, he respected it.

“As far as the BBI is concerned we are guided by the rule of law and our right to appeal the decision of the high court at the Court of Appeal. No one promised us a quick or smooth journey. So we must stay the course,” Kalonzo said.

The Wiper leader urged MPs who have criticized the verdict to let the legal procedure play out.

“The primary intent of BBI is to build real national bridges, not divisions. To build and sustain national ethos, values and a more cohesive society. That kind of mature democracy means that we may not always agree, but we can always respect one another, and most of all, respect of Constitution, and the institutions it has created.” He concluded.

After the High Court deemed the Constitution of Kenya Amendment Bill 2020 illegal, the Building Bridges Initiative suffered a serious blow.

The judges claimed that when the President suggested constitutional ammendments, he overstepped his authority.

In their determination, Judges Jairus Ngaah, George Odunga, Teresia Matheka Joel Ngugi, and Chacha Mwita further ruled that the President appointed committee (BBI Steering Committee), which was established via gazette notice, rendering the whole process state-sponsored.
