Nanyuki, Kenya – June 6, 2025
The High Court in Nanyuki has sentenced Jane Wanjiru Macharia to 40 years in prison after convicting her for the murder of George Gachibi Karegwa, her former partner, in a tragic case that has reignited conversations around domestic relationships, rehabilitation, and repeat criminality.
The court found that on the night of December 4, 2018, Macharia, alongside two accomplices, unlawfully entered Karegwa’s home.
There, they murdered him and proceeded to rob him of various personal belongings, household items, and even his motor vehicle — a chilling act that underscored the brutality of the crime.
During sentencing, lead prosecutor Esther Kimani emphasized several aggravating factors that painted a troubling picture of the accused’s criminal history.
Macharia was already serving three sentences for unrelated robbery offenses.
In a damning twist, it emerged that two more robbery cases were still pending in court — both allegedly committed while she was out on bond for the very murder she has now been convicted of.
These repeated violations led to the revocation of her bond.
Although she initially entered a not guilty plea, Macharia later changed her plea, and was sentenced to 40 years behind bars — a sentence that reflects not just the gravity of the murder, but also her pattern of criminal conduct and failure to reform.
