The World Bank is poised to approve a significant loan for the second phase of the Kenya Social Economic Inclusion Project (KSEIP).
A review of documents published by the Bretton Woods institution shows the World Bank board members are scheduled to deliberate on the approval of the Ksh 26 billion (USD 200 million) loan on October 15.
If approved, the funds will support KSEIP, a project aimed at providing financial assistance to senior citizens and vulnerable individuals in Kenya.
The initiative is currently in its Concept Review Stage, during which the World Bank will consider various implementation strategies for the project’s second phase.
The Ministry of Labor and Social Protection, along with the National Drought Management Authority, will oversee the project’s implementation.
The funds are expected to be disbursed starting July 1, 2025, for the 2025 financial year, focusing on social support for vulnerable and older populations.
In preparation for the second phase, the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection has advertised for consultants to assist in software development and financial services. Meanwhile, the government continues to utilize the funds disbursed in the 2024 financial year.
“The Government of Kenya has received financing from the World Bank towards the cost of the Kenya Social Economic Inclusion Project-KSEIP and intends to apply part of the proceeds for consulting services,” stated an official notice.
This announcement follows the government’s registration of senior citizens for monthly stipends in September 2023.
During a cabinet meeting on August 8, 2023, President William Ruto reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the Inua Jamii Program, which aims to support over 2 million elderly Kenyans with monthly disbursements.
