Dominguez was unrivaled on Saturday as all other competitors in the all-Ford Fiesta Rally3 class required assistance to get back to the Naivasha service park.
Fellow FIA Junior WRC regular Hamza Anwar was forced to retire after picking up three punctures on the day’s final stage.
Anwar’s problems from Friday afternoon continued into Saturday morning when the Kenyan hopeful came to a standstill after a water splash on the first stage of the day.
Jason Bailey was the next to falter. After winning the first stage of the day and riding comfortably in second place overall, the Canadian hit a compression and damaged his engine’s oil sump, allowing Jeremiah Wahome to pass him at the conclusion of the loop.
Even with a 20-minute advantage at midday service, Dominguez had no time to relax and enjoy his lunch. Instead, the Paraguayan was compelled to roll up his sleeves and forego his meal to aid his team in changing the gearbox on his Fiesta Rally3.
That was more than could be said for his last remaining adversary, Jeremiah Wahome, who had to retire due to mechanical issues, leaving Dominguez to fight the afternoon loop alone.
If the 23-year-old finishes Sunday’s stage without incident, it will be his second WRC3 triumph of the season, moving him up to second overall in the championship standings.
