Writer Ngugi Wa Thiong’o Gets Global Award

Ngugi wa Thiong’o has been awarded the coveted PEN/Nabokov Award for Achievement in International Literature. 

The author of ‘Birth of a Dream Weaver’ was selected the 2022 PEN/Nabokov Award honoree ahead of the award ceremony on February 28 in New York City, making him the first African to receive the accolade. 

The judging panel for the award praised the writer as a “transformative figure in African literature.” 

“Many decades later, his critique of language and power in Decolonizing the Mind continues to elicit vigorous debate.”

Ngugi will be honored with Elaine May, an American comedian and screenwriter who will receive the PEN/Mike Nichols Writing for Performance Award, and playwright Jackie Sibblies Drury, the recipient of the PEN/Laura Pels International Foundation for Theater Award in 2022. 

The prize money for the award is Ksh.5.6 million ($50,000).
