Xabi Alonso’s Real Madrid Overhaul: Ferland Mendy Set for Exit as Youthful Backline Takes Shape

The winds of change are blowing through the Santiago Bernabéu as new manager Xabi Alonso begins reshaping Real Madrid in his image. And nowhere is that transformation more evident than in defence department long overdue for serious reinforcements.

After seasons plagued by defensive frailty, Real Madrid have acted decisively this summer, bringing in Dean Huijsen, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Álvaro Carreras as the foundation of a revitalized backline.

Their arrivals mark the dawn of a new tactical identity under Alonso — one that values athleticism, ball progression, and positional flexibility.

Carreras In, Mendy Out?

While Huijsen and Trent have already impressed in the Club World Cup, fans are still waiting to see Carreras debut with the first team. Nevertheless, the club has placed full faith in the 22-year-old Spaniard, identifying him as the left-back of the future.

His promotion has sparked an inevitable left-back logjam, with Carreras joining Fran García and Ferland Mendy in the squad. However, Alonso has already made his choice — and it spells bad news for Mendy.

According to AS, Alonso has opted to retain Fran García, leaving Mendy as the odd man out. Despite signing a new three-year deal just months ago, the French international has now been deemed surplus to requirements.

Alonso’s decision is rooted in long-term planning and availability. Fran García, 24, is not only five years younger than Mendy but also boasts a cleaner injury record.

Mendy, on the other hand, has been plagued by persistent fitness issues, making him an unreliable option across the span of a grueling season.

The Frenchman has been a strong defensive presence when fit, but Real Madrid appear to be moving toward a more modern, attacking full-back profile — something García and Carreras are better suited to provide.

The challenge now is finding a buyer for Mendy before the transfer window slams shut. His wages and recent injury history could complicate negotiations, but both the club and the player reportedly agree that a summer exit is the best path forward.
