“Yesu Wa Tongaren” To Remain In Police Custody For Four More Days

A Bungoma court has ordered Eliud Wekesa, the self-proclaimed “Jesus of Tongaren,” to spend four more days in police custody.

Wekesa appeared in court on Friday, where police detectives asked for more time to complete their investigation into the preacher.

According to Principal Magistrate Tom Mark Olando, the period is to allow police to take the accused for psychiatric evaluation and conduct a search of the suspect’s church and premises.

The case will be mentioned on May 16.

The prosecution had asked for a seven-day investigation into Wekesa’s teachings and activities.

According to the prosecution’s affidavit, Wekesa’s church, New Jerusalem, was not legally registered.

Wekesa voluntarily surrendered to police on Wednesday after being summoned for questioning about his religious teachings and activities.

Wekesa, accompanied by his supporters, pleaded not to be arrested, claiming that he had nothing to hide. However, the police insisted on holding him for further questioning in order to determine the next course of action.

On Monday, the controversial preacher claimed that he does nothing but preach the true gospel.
