Raila Odinga, the leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), has accused Deputy President William Ruto of using public monies to campaign across the country.
In his third day of campaigning in Western Kenya, Odinga said that Ruto should avoid duplicity by saying that money set aside for development was diverted to pay his political campaign.
“You have seen that Ruto has stolen your funds and he is giving you money in the name of donations to the youth and women…dishing out Sh5 million and Sh1 million. Every month he uses Sh100 million for harambees yet his salary his Sh2 million. Where does he get the money?”
Ruto said wheeler-dealers have hindered the government’s development program to advance their political interests during his tour in Mombasa on Saturday.
Ruto expressed his displeasure with the decision to shift cash intended for agriculture to fund Jubilee Party activities.
In a retort, Odinga mocked Ruto’s sentiments, claiming that in his capacity as Deputy President, he has diverted funds intended for development.
“He comes out and calls us ‘kitendawili’ and all that nonsense,” he claimed.
Despite the criticism from his political opponents, he pledged that if elected president, he will provide his 6,000 shilling monthly stipend to unemployed youth.
Odinga stated that the project, which would be implemented as a direct cash transfer scheme, will benefit two million of the poorest households on a monthly basis.
Sealing all corruption loopholes, according to the former Prime Minister, will be critical in obtaining finances for the assistance program’s long-term sustainability.
