Young MP Threatens To Return Uhuru’s Car Gift

Hon. John Paul Mwirigi of Igembe South recieving a car gift from President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2017

Igembe South member of parliament John Paul Mwirigi has said he is willing to return the multi-million car President Uhuru Kenyatta gifted him after winning the 2017 election.

Mwirigi, 23, who was a university student at the time, ran as an independent candidate and did not own a car when he won the seat. The President purchased a car for him after defeating affluent candidates who were shining on major parties such as Jubilee to ease his movement now that he was an MP.

In a long Facebook post on Sunday, April 10, Mwirigi said he will not be intimidated by President Uhuru’s allies on the pretext that the Head of State bought him a car.

The young legislature regrated that his allegiance to Deputy President William Ruto has been constituted to be a form of disrespect to the president.

“Now, recently several leaders have been castigating me claiming that by supporting DP Ruto, I am disrespecting the president. I have never insulted or disrespected the president in any way and I am not planning to do so at any time. But note, my allegiance to DP William Ruto will not change at all,” He stated.

Mwirigi accused Agriculture CS Peter Munya of using the gift from the president to blackmail him to change his stance on the coming presidential election.

The youthful lawmaker revealed that if the blackmail will continue then he will be left with no option but to return the car to President Uhuru.

“I may, for the sake of my peace of mind and independence consider returning the gift. I will not bear the blackmail by the CS anymore,” Mwirigi added.

The Igembe South lawmaker’s declaration follows a public disagreement with CS Munya, in which the CS accused Mwirigi of betraying President Uhuru by switching allegiance to DP Ruto.

After the 2017 general elections, the MP traveled by matatu from Meru to Nairobi for induction as a member of the National Assembly.

When President Uhuru learned of his predicament, he gifted him with a brand-new car that he claimed would allow him to serve his constituents better.
