A 27-year-old woman has died in Bali after following an extreme “fruitarian” diet that left her severely malnourished.

The woman, Karolina Krzyzak, had checked into the Sumberkima Hill resort in December 2024, where she booked a private villa with a pool. Hotel workers said they were shocked by her appearance when she arrived, she looked extremely thin, with sunken eyes and visible bones.

During her stay, Karolina’s health continued to get worse. Staff noticed her nails turning yellow, her teeth starting to rot, and her body growing weaker every day.

One night, she was so weak that a hotel worker had to help her back to her room.

The hotel team begged her several times to see a doctor, but she kept refusing. A few days later, a local friend reached out to the hotel, worried because Karolina had stopped replying to messages.

When staff went to check on her, they found her lying unresponsive in her room. She was later confirmed dead.

Doctors said she died from severe malnutrition, caused by a lack of essential nutrients. Reports also revealed she had osteoporosis and low albumin levels, both signs of long-term starvation.

Her death has sparked concern about the dangers of extreme diets and how important it is to eat a balanced variety of foods, even in plant-based lifestyles.
