Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Tuesday that security guarantees for Ukraine are expected to be formalized within the next 10 days, following high-level talks in Washington with U.S. President Donald Trump and European leaders.
Speaking at a televised press briefing, Zelenskyy said details of the guarantees would be gradually “unpacked” by Kyiv’s partners before being formalized in writing. “Security guarantees will probably be unpacked by our partners, and more and more details will emerge. All of this will somehow be formalized on paper within the next week to 10 days,” he said.
On Monday, Trump assured Zelenskyy that the United States would play a central role in helping guarantee Ukraine’s security in any eventual peace deal with Russia, though the scope of U.S. commitments remains unclear.
Zelenskyy welcomed the pledge as a “major step forward,” saying Washington’s involvement would be crucial. “It is important that the United States is sending a clear signal that it will be among the countries helping to coordinate and will also be a participant in the security guarantees for Ukraine,” he noted.
While a comprehensive peace deal remains distant, Zelenskyy described his meeting with Trump as the most constructive yet. He confirmed that Ukraine was prepared to hold talks with Russia “in any format,” including direct discussions with President Vladimir Putin, but said no date had been set. “The question of territories is something we will leave between me and Putin,” he added.
Part of the anticipated security package, Zelenskyy revealed, includes a U.S. weapons deal worth about $90 billion, covering advanced aircraft, air defense systems, and other military equipment. He also disclosed that Washington had agreed to purchase Ukrainian-made drones once Kyiv resumes exports, calling the arrangement “important for Ukraine’s defense and industry.”
Despite the uncertainty over when direct negotiations with Moscow might occur, Zelenskyy said the commitments from Washington and Europe signal progress toward securing Ukraine’s long-term stability in the face of Russia’s ongoing war.
