Just three weeks after parting ways with Gor Mahia, veteran Kenyan coach Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno has bounced back with a new managerial role at Tanzanian Premier League side Tanzania Prisons FC.
The 56-year-old was officially unveiled on Wednesday evening by the Mbeya-based outfit, marking the beginning of his first coaching stint outside Kenya. Zico takes over the reins from Amani Josiah, who was dismissed following a season of disappointing results.
Zico’s move comes in the wake of a turbulent campaign with Gor Mahia, where he and his technical bench were relieved of their duties after a trophyless 2023/24 season. Under his leadership, the 21-time FKF Premier League champions failed to defend their title, which went to Kenya Police FC, and also lost the FKF Cup final 2-1 to newly promoted Nairobi United on June 29, a defeat that ultimately triggered changes at the club.
Now at the helm of Tanzania Prisons, Zico is tasked with reviving a side that narrowly escaped relegation last season, finishing 13th in the 16-team league with just 31 points. The club is counting on his experience and structured coaching style to stabilize performances and aim higher in the upcoming campaign.
“Zico brings not just tactical depth but also the calm and leadership this club needs,” a club official said during his unveiling.
The former KCB, Posta Rangers, and Harambee Stars assistant coach becomes the second Kenyan to manage Tanzania Prisons, following Patrick Odhiambo, who led the team until early 2023.
As the new Tanzanian league season draws near, Zico’s appointment represents a fresh start for both the coach and the club. With his reputation at stake and a new challenge on foreign soil, all eyes will be on whether the seasoned tactician can engineer a turnaround and restore Tanzania Prisons to competitive form.
