New York City Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani will reside in Gracie Mansion, the historic Manhattan estate that has served as the official mayoral residence for decades, his office confirmed Monday.
The decision ends speculation over whether he would move from the rent-stabilized apartment in Queens that became a flashpoint during his campaign.
Mamdani, whose platform centered on affordable housing and a citywide rent freeze, did not commit to the move immediately after his November victory. In a statement, he explained the choice as necessary for his family’s safety and his ability to focus fully on governing.
“This decision came down to our family’s safety and the importance of dedicating all of my focus on enacting the affordability agenda New Yorkers voted for,” he said.
The mayor-elect has lived in Astoria, Queens—a diverse, immigrant-rich neighborhood known for its culinary scene and middle-class families. In his statement, he paid tribute to the community: “To Astoria: thank you for showing us the best of New York City. While I may no longer live in Astoria, Astoria will always live inside me and the work I do.”
During the campaign, opponents, including former Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticized Mamdani for occupying a rent-stabilized unit despite his privileged background. His mother is acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair, and his father, Mahmood Mamdani, is a professor at Columbia University.
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been home to most New York City mayors since World War II. Mamdani’s move aligns him with that tradition while closing a contentious chapter of his transition into office.
