Nairobians Resist New Sh100 hourly Parking Fees

The Kenya Alliance of Residents Associations (KARA) has spoken out against City Hall’s intentions to charge residents for parking in residential areas.

On Thursday, Chief Executive Officer Henry Ochieng opposed the decision, claiming that city residents are already burdened by a slew of taxes.

“Our attention is drawn to the move by the county government to collect parking fees from parking areas within various estates in Nairobi as a way of achieving the revenue collection targets. Kara strongly objects to this move as it is ill-timed, unjustifiable, and insensitive to the economic hardship Kenyans are going through,” he added.

City Hall proposes to issue parking for residents’ permits under the Nairobi City County Draft Parking Policy.

Off-street parking, which is appealing because of the relative protection of vehicles from theft and vandalism, would cost one Sh100 per hour as part of the county government’s efforts to take advantage of the strong competition for available slots and relieve traffic congestion.

On-street parking spaces south of Kenyatta Avenue and west of Moi Avenue touted as the most sought-after by vehicles, would set you back Sh90 per hour.

An hourly parking fee of Sh75 will be paid for parking in regions other than the two premium sites. In the city center, cars are currently charged a daily on-street parking fee of Sh200.

Kara has promised to pursue every legal tool available to guarantee that no parking fees are collected from estate parking lots.
