Atleast Ten people have been confirmed dead after a boat they were travelling in capsized in near Lake Victoria’s Usenge Beach in Bondo.

Local beach management confirmed the incident, reporting that out of 20 passengers on board, only 10 survived the tragedy.

The water bus was plying the Mageta Island—Usenge beach route in Siaya County when the incident occurred.

Sources say the boat could have been hit by strong winds and high tides.

Assistant Chief of Got Agulu sub-location Fredrick Ochieng Abuonji confirmed that a search and rescue team is combing the waters for any more bodies.

The vast fresh water lake has claimed many lives, with local residents faulting the government for laxity in implementing safety measures.

Recently, President Uhuru Kenyatta commissioned the revamped Kisumu port, which will also be manned by the Kenya Coast Guard, as well as Kenya Navy, who protect borders at the Lake.
