2 Children Dead, 11 Hospitalised After Eating Githeri In Kakamega

Two children have been confirmed dead while eleven others hospitalized after eating a meal of githeri in Shinadule village in Matete, Kakamega County.

The children reportedly ate the meal which was prepared by their grandmother.

According to the family, one child died on the spot, while another died upon arrival at the hospital.

Rainne Juma, a doctor at Webuye Casualty Unit, stated that the children, aged one to ten years, were admitted with stomach upsets, diarrhea, and vomiting symptoms but were taken off dangerous medication and are now stable.

According to the family, the grandmother made githeri for breakfast and shared it with the children before going to church.

She instructed the children to go to the kitchen and get food if they were hungry.

She had no idea she would be called back to learn she had lost her grandchildren.

Detectives from the Kakamega DCI office have begun investigations to determine what caused the death and alleged food poisoning.

Both bodies have been moved to the Webuye Referral Hospital Mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
