Safaricom’s 25th-anniversary celebrations have made their first millionaire, 20-year-old Yvonne Wanjiku Kang’ara from Ngeu, Kiambu County.
Yvonne won KES 1 million after buying a KES 20 data bundle using M-PESA, earning her an entry into the Shangwe @25 consumer promotion draw.
“I’m still in shock. When I got the call, I thought it was a scam until my mom confirmed it was from Safaricom,” said Yvonne, who plans to use her winnings to continue her education, start a business for her mother, and build a home for her grandmother in Londiani.
In addition to her cash prize, Yvonne received KES 250,000 to support a community project of her choice, funds she intends to donate to a local children’s home.
Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa praised Yvonne’s win as a reflection of the company’s mission: “It’s inspiring to see how a simple KES 20 data bundle can transform a life. This is what Safaricom stands for, creating opportunities and transforming lives.”
Through Shangwe @25, more than 5 million customers are expected to win prizes worth KES 250 million, including cash, devices, data, and business support tools.
The campaign will award 25 millionaires across the country, alongside SMEs and community projects, in celebration of Safaricom’s 25 years of innovation and impact.
