President Uhuru Kenyatta’s succession in 2022 has prompted a schism in the key voting bloc, with a group of officials from Mt. Kenya East, led by Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi, declaring that they will go it alone.
Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi was endorsed as the region’s leader during a conference of Meru leaders in Nyambene on Saturday.
Shortly after his ‘appointment’ Kiraitu quickly proclaimed their new political direction.
The incidences come in the wake of rebellion by a section of Mount Kenya leaders discrediting the controversial coronation of National Assembly speaker Justin Muturi.
Kirinyaga governor Ann Waiguru said the coronation was a sham and disrespect to the regions’ leadership.

“Huwezi amka kutoka kwako asubuhi ukaenda kwa msituni siku saba halafu unakuja kutuambia wewe ni kiongozi wetu…(You cannot get up from your home in the morning and go to the forest for seven days and then come to tell us you are our leader)” said Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru.
As lawmakers who consolidated behind President Uhuru Kenyatta for his first and second mandates now struggle for supremacy, the role of President Uhuru Kenyatta in the region’s unity, has long been under sharp focus.
