Hon. Martha Karua, leader of Narc Kenya and the 2022 Azimio la Umoja running mate for Raila Odinga, has officially announced her party’s exit from the Azimio Coalition.
The move came after she accused her coalition partner of joining the same government that ‘stole Azimio victory’.
She is now seeking alternative alignments ahead of 2027.
Karua, a celebrated champion of democracy and constitutionalism in Kenya, played a pivotal role in Azimio’s 2022 presidential campaign.
As Raila Odinga’s running mate, she brought credibility and a reputation for integrity to the coalition.
However, despite their combined efforts, Azimio faced defeat to Kenya Kwanza’s William Ruto and Rigathi Gachagua, securing 48.85% of the vote against Kenya Kwanza’s 50.49%.
Throughout the campaign, Karua was instrumental in mobilizing support, particularly among women and reform-minded voters, while advocating for accountability and justice.
However, her influence failed to significantly sway voters in the Mt. Kenya region, traditionally a stronghold for her political presence.
Azimio’s performance in the region fell short of expectations, contributing to the coalition’s loss.
Karua’s exit from Azimio raises broader questions about coalition dynamics in Kenya. While her departure reflects personal and party interests, it also highlights the lack of binding frameworks in political coalitions.
Analysts suggest that future coalitions should include clear timelines, constitutional inclusivity, and robust public participation to ensure sustainability and representation.
While her time in Azimio may not have delivered victory, her role in advancing democratic ideals and constitutional reform has cemented her legacy as one of Kenya’s most principled leaders.
