Dr. Ezekiel Mutua: It Is Fascinating People Still Think Iam The KFCB CEO

Dr. Ezekiel Mutua, former Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) and current CEO of the Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK), has spoken out about his enduring association with KFCB, even years after his departure.

Mutua, who acquired the nickname Deputy Jesus shared his thoughts on legacy, explaining how his passionate leadership at KFCB continues to define public perception of his career.

Mutua highlighted that his tenure at KFCB, from 2015 to 2021, was marked by groundbreaking reforms, including the enforcement of watershed rules, banning inappropriate content, and fighting the promotion of LGBTQ material in Kenyan films.

Despite significant resistance from some media houses and activists, his decisions were upheld by the courts, solidifying his reputation as a staunch advocate for Kenya’s cultural and moral values.

Under his leadership, KFCB’s budget grew exponentially from Ksh88 million to nearly Ksh600 million.

The Board also gained international recognition, earning awards and fostering partnerships with major global film festivals, including Hollywood and Cannes.

Mutua acknowledged the controversies surrounding his tenure, including organized efforts to disband KFCB, but expressed gratitude for the impact of his work.

“You can do something with so much passion that people will not forget you years after you are gone. It’s called impact,” he said.

Even as he continues to lead MCSK, Mutua remains a polarizing yet respected figure in Kenya’s regulatory landscape, with his legacy at KFCB leaving an indelible mark.
