One dead as traders lose property in Mlolongo fire

A fire incident in Mlolongo on Monday night claimed one life and destroyed 12 guest rooms and a store. 

Athi River East subcounty police commander Anderson Mbae said the unidentified body, burnt beyond recognition, was collected from the scene on Monday morning.

Mbae said the scene was processed by the scene of crime officers and the body was removed to the City mortuary awaiting postmortem and identification.

He said the fire reportedly broke out at around 1.00 am Monday.

In an update on Tuesday, December 17, Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti commended firefighters for their swift response, which helped prevent further loss of lives and property.

“I must commend our team of firefighters who moved swiftly to quell the fire thus preventing further loss of lives and property. The cause of the fire was not immediately established and investigations are underway,” she said.

Wavinya added that her team, led by Advisor for Special Programmes Winnie Kivuti, is working closely with the affected individuals to provide guidance on recovery and support measures.

The governor also reassured residents of her administration’s commitment to ensuring safety in business premises and residential areas.

“My able team led by Advisor Special Programmes Ms. Winnie Kivuti is in touch with the victims and will advise on recovery and mitigation measures. I assure all residents of our commitment and readiness to ensure their safety in their business premises and residential areas,” she added.
