Four children perish as fire razes their house

Tragedy struck a village in Nginda area, Maragua Constituency, Murang’a County on Thursday, December 19 after four children were killed in a house fire.

According to witnesses, the fire was first noticed by curious neighbours who spotted billows of smoke emanating from the house, prompting them to rush and check.

However, attempts to save the children proved futile as the fire quickly spread to all parts of the house, leaving the locals with no choice but to extinguish it.

After several hours of fighting the flames, the neighbours successfully put out the fire, however, the children had already been burnt beyond recognition.

Police report indicate that Lucy Njeri, who hails from Gakoigo village, went to the market and opted to lock the four minors inside her rented iron sheet house.

Unfortunately, the fire started when she had not returned, burning the helpless four children (3 boys and a girl aged 4, 1.5, 3 and 2 years) beyond recognition.

“All were burnt beyond recognition,” a report filed at Maragua Police Station reads.

“Scene documented accordingly, and the bodies moved to Murang’a Level Five Hospital morgue awaiting autopsy.”

Detectives are currently working to ascertain the cause of fire.
